I got an interesting letter recently from an anonymous sender who listens to my show and wanted to get something off her chest – a piece of advice for people in relationships. It’s sort of a “be grateful for what you have instead of mourning what you don’t” reminder for all of us today…
I was raised in an emotionally abusive home and wound up defensive and wary. I chose college and work over relationships – I always thought I had time for that later. Then I chose a field that is overwhelmingly female. I am in my forties, single female, and haven't been on a date in a REALLY long time. I am watching my chance for a biological family shrink with every birthday.
I am not bitter; my life is full and I love my work. But I would like to say to those who have someone at home who are still pining for the storybook romance: maybe with a little work, patience, and gratitude that you are loved just as you are right now, maybe then you can find the prince inside the frog again. Take it from someone who has never had it. Anonymous
I like the message to appreciate what you have because I think we often take our situations and loved ones for granted without realizing it. But I also want “anonymous” to know it’s never too late to find love. Starting a family is never out of the picture. Even if a biological family is not an option, and such is the case for many people, families can form in a variety of ways. I have bio kids, adopted kids, foster kids, kids that are like my kids who drop in with their kids. If your heart is open to it, love and family will find you in one form or another.
Do you have some good advice you want to share? Something you want to get off your chest? Maybe you’ve been listening to the stories on my show at night and they’ve got you thinking about what you would say to that person. Write to me! I love to hear your feedback and advice. I’m no expert on life and love, and I think we all have something valuable to share.
