The weekend began Saturday morning with clear, blue skies and a decent breeze. Then came that summer heat that makes us so glad for the day they invented AC. But sitting around on the weekend isn’t really on my schedule these days in Kelly’s Kitchen. I was up and over at St Anthony’s Wellness Center at 6:45 am and enjoyed using the rower and elliptical. But of course, then comes the rest of the day with groceries, laundry and all that fun stuff. But taking the time to grab lunch at Dunedin Bagels and Deli was a good choice; not one, but four different styles of Cuban on the menu. Of course, going with the traditional Cuban is always a good choice, and I took that up to Honeymoon Island to just enjoy the fresh air and view. The fact they wisely use the Cuban bread from La Segunda Bakery really made all the difference for me. They’re on Main St at Skinner, and at 1 pm on a Saturday, plenty of people were coming in for bagels, what looked like delicious desserts that I’ll be sure to sample next time, and a good, cold drink. Nice little place, and another great chance to support the local businesses. Me, and a quite a few other people lined up to get onto the Island! The Dunedin Causeway was busy on both sides, plenty of sailboats, jet skis, and those enjoying a lazy afternoon on a float with the kids. My choice is usually the north beach on the island, quieter and an intensely beautiful view. Goes great with a Cuban.

   And speaking of Cubans I might have found something to add to my staycation list in a week; they’re going for a world record in Ybor City on Saturday the 18^th at The Taste Of Cuban Sandwich Event at the Cuban Club from 11 am - 4 pm. You can walk in the door for free, snack size sandwich tastings will be offered for sale from the winners of the Annual Cuban Sandwich Festival that include Faedo’s On The GO, which won the #1 Traditional Sandwich in 2012, Stone Soup Co., which won #2 Traditional Sandwich in 2012, Gaspar’s Grotto, which won the #1 Non-Traditional Sandwich in 2012 and more. There’s also an opportunity to lend a helping hand to HELP Emberlynn Padilla which will be present collecting donations for baby Emberlynn an 8 month miracle baby born with Congenital diaphragmatic hernia. CDH is a congenital malformation, or birth defect of the diaphragm. Malformation of the diaphragm allows the abdominal organs to push into the lung formation. CDH is a life-threatening in infants, and a major cause of death due to two complications: pulmonary hypoplasia and pulmonary hypertension. Stop in, have a taste, help out and enjoy the day in Ybor.
