You Want Me to Eat WHAT?

I think we might all admit to eating at least one really weird food in our lifetime, but this goes above and beyond anything I’ve heard about, or read. I was spending a little quality time cruising the net, looking for food news, recipes…and then I found this. The Daily Meal did an interview on what they consider some of the most “out there” foods and it might not be something you’ll want to sit down and peruse over breakfast. But I’ll admit it’s intriguing!  What’s on the list? Well…since we have a seemingly endless supply of cockroaches in our fine state, how about Teriyaki Cockroaches? Gene Rurka is a fascinating man with a very adventurous appetite when it comes to Entomophagy (the eating of insects by humans), and has a farm which actually grows their own supply of Hissing Cockroaches, specially prepared as a delicacy. Always Hungry New York has a beaut of an article on many of those wiggly things.

I’ve heard of Haggis, comprised of the heart, liver and lung meat of a sheep or calf. Supposedly quite good and in Scotland it’s prepared any number of ways, even in a vegetarian version. The taste is supposed to be a bit on the nutty side. I will take your word for it. How about Snake Wine or Fried Tarantula? I supposed when it comes right down to it, the most adventurous item I’ve had were my first oysters, and I loved them. But think of what we do miss when we just dismiss something without tasting it first. Now, I’m not advocating indulging in some and/or any of the above! But losing out on a great meal because it’s not the usual cuisine on your agenda would be a shame. So let’s do this. If you know of a place that serves something a little out of the ordinary, let me know about it and I’ll make a point of checking a few out. If dining isn’t an adventure, then we’ve lost our edge for a little more fun. Is it me, or do you suddenly feel six years old, and someone just dared you to "eat this!" Tell you what, send me what interesting item you've indulged in, and we'll choose one entry at random to win a special gift from Kelly's Kitchen.  This is going to be good! Let’s see what you all can come up with for me at ann.kelly@coxinc.com. I’m still trying to figure out Spam…..
