FedEx driver narrowly escapes tornado by hiding behind Coke machine

A quick-thinking FedEx worker took refuge behind a Coke machine as an EF-3 tornado ripped through south Louisiana last week.

Kyra Johnson, 35, says she was filling in for a co-worker on February 23 and was making a delivery to Sagona's True Value Hardware in Paincourtville when the bad weather came  rolling in.

"I don't even remember being scared. I didnt have time. It was survival mode," said Johnson in a Facebook post after surviving the massive storm.

Surveillance video shows Johnson running up the the hardware store's doors but they were locked. That's when she hides behind the drink machine as her only chance for safety, but the strong winds took it down.

"That Coke machine fell. I had nothing to block me. (God) told me to hold on to the door and I did as I watched my life flash before my eyes."

Store owner David Sagona posted security videos of the damage to Facebook and couldn't believe that Johnson wasn't harmed.

"Kyra Johnson, I don't know how you survived. You had about 2 seconds to seek cover," Sagona wrote.

The tornado eventually killed two people in an RV park as it made its way through Assumption and St. James parishes with winds up to 140 mph.
