The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said Sgt. Vance was driving on Interstate 4 on May 26 when traffic suddenly came to a stop and her cruiser was rear-ended.

A panicked young man only identified as Quintin was behind the wheel.

Neither Vance nor Quintin were injured. However, Quintin was upset and worried he would go to jail. Vance sat and comforted him, ensuring him he would not go to jail.

“She witnessed firsthand that Quintin was not speeding or distracted,” the agency said. “Simply put: accidents happen.”

The two talked so long that Vance eventually agreed to attend Quintin’s graduation from Jefferson High School, which was the next day.

“It was an offer she said she couldn’t turn down,” the agency said. “She attended to make sure he was still doing okay and congratulate him.”
