‘Hatchet’ author Gary Paulsen dead at 82, reports say

Author Gary Paulsen has died at age 82, according to multiple reports.

Publishers Weekly first broke the news Wednesday afternoon, tweeting that the Newbery Honor-winning writer died that morning.

Book publishers such as Macmillan, Random House and Scholastic later paid tribute to Paulsen, known for the teen adventure novels “Hatchet” and “The River.”

“Beloved author Gary Paulsen has passed away at the age of 82,” Random House Kids tweeted shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday. “His legacy will live on in the words of his books and through the generations of readers who have enjoyed them.”

Scholastic tweeted: “We [grieve] this incredible loss and are thankful for his numerous contributions to children’s literature throughout his life. His legacy will live on through his books.”

According to Vulture, Paulsen wrote more than 200 books, many of which focused on the wilderness. The 1983 Iditarod participant also detailed his own real-life adventures in the memoirs “Woodsong” and “Winterdance,” the entertainment outlet reported.

No further details about Paulsen’s death were immediately available.
