WELDON SPRING, Mo. — A hunter accidentally shot a hiker on a popular Missouri trail Saturday, mistaking the man for a turkey.
St. Charles County Police said the man was shot around 12:30 p.m. along the Lewis and Clark Trail in the August A. Busch Memorial and Weldon Spring Conservation Area, KSDK reported.

Rescue crews used a special off-road vehicle to reach the victim. The man was then taken by helicopter to a hospital in serious condition.
A turkey hunt managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation was taking place over the weekend, KSDK reported. A sign at the entrance to the trail indicated it ended at 1 p.m. Turkey hunting season ended Sunday.
“It sounds like it was just a really bad accident,” Val Joyner, a spokesperson for the police department, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The names of the hiker and the hunter have not been released.
