A couple has a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. After more than a decade of trying to have a baby, they welcomed a daughter in September.

Susie Troxler, 50, and Tony Troxler, 61, are first-time parents to Lily, who was born via a planned cesarean section on Sept. 29, “Good Morning America” reported.

“It’s really, really, really surreal,” Susie Troxler said. “I’d been unmarried. I’d been a wife and now the idea of being a mommy, it still hasn’t sunk in I don’t think.”

The Troxlers have been married for 13 years and tried to have a baby naturally, because, as they told “Good Morning America,” they didn’t know what options they had.

“We’re both very old-school, and when we grew up, nobody even talked about or discussed IVF [in vitro fertilization]. It wasn’t even a thing,” Suzie Troxler said.

Three years ago, during a doctor’s appointment, Suzie Troxler mentioned that the couple couldn’t become pregnant.

Dr. Carolyn Harraway-Smith referred the couple to a fertility specialist.

“Typically, if someone was younger and had a longer period of time to conceive, I would start the work-up for infertility,” Harraway-Smith said. “Because of her age, I knew we had a short window, so I referred her to a reproductive endocrinologist.”

Suzie Troxler had fibroids — benign muscular tumors that grow in the uterus.

She had them removed in January 2019, but because of her and her husband’s age, they still would not be able to conceive naturally.

They told the “Today” show, that they didn’t know they had fertility issues, including issues caused by Tony Troxler’s medical history.

“Between the two of us we had an Abraham and Sarah thing going on,” Suzie Troxler told “Today” comparing their story to that of a Bible story where God gives Sarah her first child when she is 90.

They tried IVF but it didn’t work, so they decided to go for an egg donation. After one failed attempt in 2019, their last viable embryo was implanted in February 2020 and Suzie Troxler became pregnant.

On Sept. 29, Lily was born after what was characterized as a “pretty uneventful pregnancy” according to Suzie Troxler.

There had been risks due to Suzie Troxler’s age, including gestational diabetes, premature birth and fetal chromosomal abnormalities, “Today” reported.

Despite being at an age when they could be preparing to become grandparents, the new first-time parents are counting their blessings.

“I’m of the belief that kids come when they’re supposed to come, regardless of the age of the parents. We look at it as this is exactly how it was meant to be. She’s our miracle baby,” Suzie Troxler told “Good Morning America.”
