Stolen historic doorknob: Man to be charged with taking lighthouse hardware

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. — A pilfered doorknob taken from a historic Tybee Island lighthouse has been found.

A man, whose name has not been released, is accused of taking the 155-year-old doorknob June 3, WSB reported.

Lighthouse volunteers had offered to allow the man to return the hardware without getting police involved, but no one came forward.

Tybee Island police posted the man’s photo on June 8, which had been shared nearly 3,000 times within hours of posting.

Tips led authorities to a man in Greene County, Indiana.

Sheriff’s deputies went to the man’s home on June 9 and recovered the doorknob which will be returned to the lighthouse, WSB reported.

Charges are now pending.
