Hormel unveils new bacon packaging that could keep it fresher longer

Hormel Bacon Portion Packs

If you’ve ever opened a package of bacon only to wonder how to keep the leftovers fresh, Hormel may have a new solution.

The company is rolling out a new bacon package designed to help extend freshness and reduce food waste — although it isn’t quite the resealable packaging some shoppers have been hoping for.

The new packaging comes shortly after Cheerios teamed up with Ziploc to introduce resealable cereal bags, giving breakfast lovers another reason to celebrate some much-needed packaging improvements.

Hormel’s new Black Label Portion Pack Bacon divides a 12-slice package into three individually sealed portions, with four slices in each section. That means you can use what you need and leave the remaining portions unopened until you’re ready for more.

While the individual sections aren’t resealable once opened, the packaging is designed to help keep the unused bacon fresher for longer. That’s because unopened, vacuum-sealed bacon can last longer than bacon in an opened package.

The new packaging is also intended to help reduce food waste by allowing consumers to open only the amount they need. However, it raises another question: Could the additional packaging create more plastic waste?

For now, Hormel’s Black Label Portion Pack Bacon is rolling out at select Walmart, Meijer and Albertsons locations, with a wider release planned for next year.

So, while bacon lovers may still be waiting for a truly resealable package, this new option could make it easier to keep those extra slices fresh until breakfast rolls around again.
