Tom Holland is getting some major dance partners!
Sabrina Carpenter and Margaret Qualley are joining Holland in Sony Pictures’ upcoming, currently untitled film about legendary dancer and entertainer Fred Astaire.
Holland will star as Astaire, while Qualley will play his sister and original dance partner, Adele Astaire. Carpenter will take on the iconic role of Ginger Rogers, Astaire’s famous longtime dance partner on screen.
The film is being directed by Paul King, best known for directing Paddington and Wonka. King co-wrote the screenplay with Steven Levenson, with the story based on Kathleen Riley’s book The Astaires: Fred & Adele.
The story will explore Fred and Adele Astaire’s rise as major stars on Broadway and London’s West End before Fred went on to become one of Hollywood’s most celebrated dancers.
Adele is expected to be an especially interesting part of the film. According to King, no surviving footage of Adele dancing exists, making bringing her performance style to the big screen a unique challenge.
Tom Holland Is Ready to Dance 🕺
Holland has been attached to play Astaire for several years, and he has already started preparing for the role.
The Spider-Man star has a serious dance background of his own. Before becoming a Marvel superhero, Holland played Billy Elliot in the West End production of Billy Elliot the Musical from 2008 to 2010.
Holland has also said he wants to perform the dancing himself rather than relying on doubles. He has expressed a desire to film the dance sequences in single takes, inspired by the way Astaire approached his own performances.
For Carpenter, the role marks another major step into acting after establishing herself as one of pop music’s biggest stars. She recently received her first Primetime Emmy nomination for her work as an executive producer and performer on The Muppet Show.
Qualley, meanwhile, has earned acclaim for roles in projects including Maid, Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness and The Substance.
There is currently no release date for the Fred Astaire movie.
